01) Basic and Common Operations (pdf download)
This presentation details the terms and operations that are repeatedly used throughout Cranium and Synapse.

02) Editing Molecular Structure (pdf download)
This presentation details the use of Cranium's and Synapse's structure editor to enter the structure of molecules and groups.

03) Estimating Chemical Properties (video)
Demonstration of Cranium's and Synapse's capabilities for estimating the physical properties of pure chemicals.

04) Estimating Mixture Properties (video)
Demonstration of Cranium's and Synapse's capabilities for estimating the physical properties of mixtures.

05) Editing and Adding Estimation Techniques (video)
Demonstration of the procedures for editing existing estimation techniques or adding new estimation techniques. Applicable to both Cranium and Synapse.

06) Estimating Vapor-Liquid Equilibria (video)
Demonstrates the use of Cranium and Synapse for estimating bubble and dew points.

07) Designing Chemicals (video)
Details the basic steps needed to use Synapse to design a new chemical which satisfies a set of physical property and molecular structure constraints.

MKS Documents

The table to the right lists a variety of knowledge bases and documents. Some of these are updated versions of those documents distributed with Cranium and Synapse. Others are specialty documents that focus on particular types of chemicals or applications.

MKS Core Knowledge Base
This knowledge base contains physical property data for more than 950 chemicals, 300 mixtures and 190 estimation techniques.

MKS TGER Template Knowledge Base
This knowledge base is often used as the starting document for a new knowledge base. The MKS TGER Template KB contains information on techniques (T), groups (G), elements (E) and references (R). No chemical or mixture entities are contained within this knowledge base.

MKS GER Template Knowledge Base
This knowledge base is often used for importing physical property values and technique parameters from the files of other software programs, e.g., process simulation document files. The MKS GER Template KB contains information on groups (G), elements (E) and references (R). No chemical, mixture or technique entities are contained within this knowledge base.

MKS Sample Knowledge Base
This knowledge base is often used for learning and experimentation purposes. It contains approximately 400 chemicals, 100 mixtures and 200 estimation techniques. Because the Sample KB is smaller than the Core KB, it is often quicker to use the Sample KB when using the Reader versions of Cranium and Synapse.

MKS Organosilicon Evaluation KB
This knowledge base is contains physical property data for 65 organosilicon chemicals. Some of these data are not included in the MKS Core Knowledge Base. The data in this knowledge base was used to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of Cranium's and Synapse's estimation techniques for organosilicon chemicals. (See the evaluation webpage for details.)

Case Studies, Evaluations, and Technical Notes

The case studies, evaluations, and technical notes listed in the table to the right provide extended examples of how Cranium and Synapse can be used to solve a variety of physical property problems.

Using Cranium to Find Azeotropes
This case study shows how to use Cranium or Synapse to find binary azeotropes. It contains a technical paper explaining the thermodynamic basis of the methodology, a video showing all the steps needed to search for azeotropes, a bookmarks document containing a list of common solvents and a knowledge base containing the needed data and estimation techniques.

Estimating Properties of Organosilicon Chemicals
This evaluation investigated how well Cranium and Synapse can estimate the physical properties of organosilicon chemicals. Estimates by techniques for the normal boiling point, critical temperature, critical pressure, liquid density, and liquid vapor pressure were compared against experimental data.
